What Are the Facts?
- Cancer is the leading cause of death from disease in children between the ages of 1 and 19.
- One of every 330 people in the United States will develop cancer by the age of 20.
- The average age of a child with cancer is 6 years old.
- Childhood cancer rates have increased every year for the past 25 years.
- Two of the most widely known cancer treatments, chemotherapy and bone marrow transplantation, were first developed as treatments for childhood cancer.
- Major cancer funding organizations contribute less than 5% of their monies to childhood cancer research. An even lesser percentage is given to early stage research. As a result, childhood cancer research, especially early stage research, is underfunded or, in many cases, simply unfunded. CancerFree Kids is committed to changing that.

What is CFK?
CancerFree Kids is a nonprofit organization founded by Ellen and Sam Flannery after their baby daughter was diagnosed with cancer at 5 months of age. Today, due to advances in cancer research and the grace of God, that baby is a healthy 3rd grader. But there is much work to do...
More children die from cancer than from any other disease in our country. It is our responsibility to change that.
CancerFree Kids supports research by raising funds in a myriad of ways — through special events, private donations, and corporate alliances — and is making a real difference in the research community. We also actively advocate for additional funding on a national level for pediatric cancer research.
CancerFree Kids is a new breed of non-profit organization. We invite anyone with an interest in pediatric cancer research to share their time, talents and treasure and to be part of the “alliance.”
We offer an opportunity to go beyond writing the check. We are forming alliances with the physicians who are doing the research. We identify research projects that need funding and make them happen. We meet the researchers, learn about their work, and know the results.
We all know what we are working for, where the money is going and feel a part of the work in progress. We hope you will join our Team!
